Eiffel Tower Designed by Gustave Eiffel's engineering company, Lead by Chief Engineer Maurice Koechlin and Architect Stephen Sauvestre. Start Date January 28, 1887 and Completed March 15, 1889. Eiffel Tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 Exposition Universelle World’s Fair, held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.
Height Originally 300 meters (984 feet); later increased to 330 meters (1,083 feet) with antennas. Material: Wrought iron; about 18,038 metal parts held together by 2.5 million rivets.
At the time of completion, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world (surpassed in 1930 by the Chrysler Building in New York). Continually repainted (every 7 years) and maintained for structural integrity.Hosts broadcast antennas for radio and television signals.
